Hartford County is a county in the United States of Connecticut. It is home to over 857183 people (2000 census). According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 877312, It is the second largest county by population in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It covers total area of 750.57 sq mi (1943.97 sq km), of which, 735.44 square miles (1904.78 sq km) of it is land and 15.13 square miles (39.19 sq km) of it is water, it is the fifth largest by area in the U.S. state of Connecticut. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in Connecticut.

As of the census of 2000, there were 857183 people, 335098 households, and 222356 families residing in the county. The population density was 1165.5 people per square mile (450/kmē), it is third most densely populated county in Connecticut. There were 353022 housing units at an average density of 480 per square mile (185.33/kmē). The average household size was 2.48 people, and the average family size was 3.05 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 24.6% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 877312, The racial makeup of the county was 80.92% White, 13.61% Black or African American, 0.34% American Indian, 3.54% Asian, 0.1% Native Hawaiian, and 1.49% from two or more races.
