Harlan County is a county in the United States of Kentucky. In 2000, the population was 33202. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 30783, It is Kentucky's 35th most populous county. It covers total area of 467.97 sq mi (1212.04 kmē), of which, 467.2 square miles (1210.04 kmē) of it is land and 0.78 square miles (2.02 kmē) of it is water, it is the 20th largest in terms of geographical size.

The population density was 71.1 people per square mile (27.45/kmē), making it the 49th most densely populated county in Kentucky. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.8 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 30783, The racial makeup of the county was 95.31% White, 2.57% Black or African American, 0.52% American Indian, 0.48% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.11% from two or more races.
