Hardy County, West Virginia is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The population of the county was 12669 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 13591, making it the 15th least populous county in West Virginia. The county has a total area of 584.48 sq mi (1513.8 sq km), of which, 583.39 square miles (1510.97 sq km) of it is land and 1.09 square miles (2.82 sq km) of it is water, making it the 11th largest by size in West Virginia.

The population density was 21.7 people per square mile (8.38/kmē), it would be the sixth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. There were 7115 housing units at an average density of 12.2 per square mile (4.71/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.42 persons, and the average family size was 2.92 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.7 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 13591, The racial makeup of the county was 96.93% White, 2.04% Black or African American, 0.21% American Indian, 0.15% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.67% from two or more races.
