Harding County is one of the 66 county of South Dakota, located towards the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 1353. The July 2008 population estimate is 1145, It is the second least populous county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2677.58 square miles (6934.9 sq km), of which, 2670.5 square miles (6916.56 sq km) of it is land and 7.08 square miles (18.34 sq km) of it is water, making it the fourth largest by size in South Dakota.


As of the census of 2000, there were 1353 people, 525 households, and 353 families residing in the county. The population density was 0.5 people per square mile (0.19/kmē), it would be the least densely populated county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. There were 804 housing units at an average density of 0.3 per square mile (0.12/kmē). The average household size was 2.5 and the average family size was 3.19. In the county Age distribution was 32.5% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 95.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 98 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 1145, The racial makeup of the county was 1106 White, 6 Black or African American, 21 American Indian, 6 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 6 from two or more races.
