The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 17371, It is 41st most populous county in Iowa. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 569.93 sq mi (1476.11 sq km), of which, 569.26 square miles (1474.38 sq km) of it is land and 0.68 square miles (1.76 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 58th largest by total area in Iowa.
