Hardin County is a United States county located in the United States of Illinois. In 2000, county's population was 4800 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 4381, It is the second smallest in terms of population. The county extends throughout a territory of 181.53 mi˛ (470.16 square kilometre ), of which, 178.33 square miles (461.87 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.2 square miles (8.29 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the second smallest by total area among Illinois's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4800 people in the county, organized into 1987 households, and 1367 families living in the county. The population density was 26.9 people per square mile (10.39/km˛), it is the 15th least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Illinois. There were 2494 housing units at an average density of 14 per square mile (5.41/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.3 persons, and the average family size was 2.81 persons. In the county Age distribution was 20.4% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 99.4 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 99.5 females. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 4381, The racial makeup of the county was 95.64% White, 2.9% Black or African American, 0.09% American Indian, 0.48% Asian, 0.14% Native Hawaiian, and 0.75% from two or more races.
