Hardee County is a United States county located in the United States of Florida. As of 2000 the population was 26938. In July 2008, its estimated population was 28888, It is 17th least populous county in Florida. The county encompasses an area of 638.33 sq mi (1653.27 kmē ), of which, 637.3 square miles (1650.6 kmē) of it is land and 1.03 square miles (2.67 kmē) of it is water, making it the 18th smallest by size in Florida.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 26938 people, 8166 households, and 6253 families residing in the county. The population density was 42.3 people per square mile (16.33/kmē), it is Florida's 20th least densely populated county. There were 9820 housing units at an average density of 15.4 per square mile (5.95/kmē). The average household size was 3.06 people, and the average family size was 3.4 people. In the county Age distribution was 27.6% under the age of 18, 11% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 119.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 123 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 28888, The racial makeup of the county was 87.92% White, 9.13% Black or African American, 1.43% American Indian, 0.54% Asian, 0.13% Native Hawaiian, and 0.84% from two or more races.
