Hanson County, South Dakota is a county of the United States of South Dakota. In 2000, the population was 3139. In July 2008, its estimated population was 3609, making it the 43rd most populous county in South Dakota. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 435.64 square miles (1128.3 sq km), of which, 434.76 square miles (1126.02 sq km) of it is land and 0.87 square miles (2.25 sq km) of it is water, giving it the third smallest by total area among South Dakota's county.


As of the census of 2000, there were 3139 people in the county, organized into 1115 households, and 848 families living in the county. The population density was 7.2 people per square mile (2.78/kmē), it is 27th most densely populated county in South Dakota. There were 1218 housing units at an average density of 2.8 per square mile (1.08/kmē). The average household size was 2.82 people, and the average family size was 3.33 people. Age range in the county was well distributed with 29.5% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.2 males.
