In July 2008, its estimated population was 3609, making it the 43rd most populous county in South Dakota. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 435.64 square miles (1128.3 sq km), of which, 434.76 square miles (1126.02 sq km) of it is land and 0.87 square miles (2.25 sq km) of it is water, giving it the third smallest by total area among South Dakota's county.
