According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Hannibal City is home to 17757 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 17432, making it the 37th most populous in Missouri. Its area is just over 15.08 sq mi (39.06 sq km), of which, 14.61 square miles (37.84 sq km) of it is land and 0.47 square miles (1.22 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 28th largest by total area in Missouri.
