Hancock County is a county in the United States of West Virginia. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 32667 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 30008, giving it the 19th largest population among West Virginia's county. The county encompasses an area of 88.35 square miles (228.83 sq km ), of which, 82.82 square miles (214.5 sq km) of it is land and 5.53 square miles (14.32 sq km) of it is water, making it the smallest by size in West Virginia. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in West Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 32667 residents, 13678 households, and 9507 families in the county. The population density was 394.4 people per square mile (152.28/kmē), making its West Virginia's second most densely populated county. There were 14728 housing units at an average density of 177.8 per square mile (68.65/kmē). The average household size was 2.36 people, and the average family size was 2.83 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 20.8% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 26.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.4 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 30008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 28837 White, 761 Black or African American, 44 American Indian, 108 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 254 from two or more races.
