Hancock County is a United States county located in the United States of Tennessee. It is home to over 6786 people (2000 census). In July 2008, its estimated population was 6693, making it Tennessee's fourth smallest county. The county has a total area of 223.5 miē (578.86 kmē), of which, 222.29 square miles (575.73 kmē) of it is land and 1.21 square miles (3.13 kmē) of it is water, it is the ninth smallest by area in the U.S. state of Tennessee.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6786 people, 2769 households, and 1938 families residing in the county. The population density was 30.5 people per square mile (11.78/kmē), it is seventh least densely populated county in Tennessee. There were 3280 housing units at an average density of 14.8 per square mile (5.71/kmē). The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.91. The population's age distribution was 23.1% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 6693, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 98.28% White, 0.46% Black or African American, 0.28% American Indian, 0.06% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.9% from two or more races.
