Hancock County is a county located in Mississippi, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 42967 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 40140, It is the 18th largest in terms of population. It has total area of 552.53 mi˛ (1431.05 square kilometre), of which, 476.88 square miles (1235.11 square kilometre) of it is land and 75.65 square miles (195.93 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 44th largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in Mississippi.

As of the census of 2000, there were 42967 people, 16897 households, and 11822 families living in the county. The population density was 90.1 people per square mile (34.79/km˛), it is the 14th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Mississippi. There were 21072 housing units at an average density of 44.2 per square mile (17.07/km˛). The average household size was 2.52 people, and the average family size was 2.99 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 14% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.5 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 40140, The racial makeup of the county was 36162 White, 2847 Black or African American, 269 American Indian, 318 Asian, 16 Native Hawaiian, and 528 from two or more races.
