Hancock County, Maine is a county located in the Northeastern Region (New England) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 51791 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 53137, making it the eighth most populous county in Maine. The county has a total area of 2351.03 sq mi (6089.14 kmē), of which, 1587.7 square miles (4112.12 kmē) of it is land and 763.33 square miles (1977.02 kmē) of it is water, it is the sixth largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks second in the size of its inland waterways in Maine.

As of the census of 2000, there were 51791 people in the county, organized into 21864 households, and 14238 families residing in the county. The population density was 32.6 people per square mile (12.59/kmē), it is Maine's tenth most densely populated county. There were 33945 housing units at an average density of 21.4 per square mile (8.26/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.31 persons, and the average family size was 2.81 persons. Age range in the county was well distributed with 22.3% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 16% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 53137, The racial makeup of the county was 97.28% White, 0.44% Black or African American, 0.42% American Indian, 0.66% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.18% from two or more races.
