Hancock County is a United States county located in the United States of Illinois. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Hancock County is home to 20121 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 18691, It is the 61st most populous county in the U.S. state of Illinois. It covers total area of 814.54 sq mi (2109.65 square kilometre), of which, 794.62 square miles (2058.06 square kilometre) of it is land and 19.92 square miles (51.59 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Illinois's 17th largest county by total area. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 20121 people in the county, organized into 8069 households, and 5606 families residing in the county. The population density was 25.3 people per square mile (9.77/kmē), making its Illinois's 13th least densely populated county. There were 8909 housing units at an average density of 11.2 per square mile (4.32/kmē). The average household size was 2.45 persons, and the average family size was 2.96 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.6% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 18.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 18691, The racial makeup of the county was 18346 White, 106 Black or African American, 40 American Indian, 50 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, and 143 from two or more races.
