Hancock County is a county located in the United States of Georgia. The population of the county was 10076 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 9440, making it the 28th least populous county in Georgia. The county extends throughout a territory of 478.76 sq mi (1239.98 square kilometre ), of which, 473.28 square miles (1225.79 square kilometre) of it is land and 5.48 square miles (14.19 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 35th largest by total area in Georgia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 10076 residents, 3237 households, and 2311 families in the county. The population density was 21.3 people per square mile (8.22/kmē), it is Georgia's 15th least densely populated county. There were 4287 housing units at an average density of 9.1 per square mile (3.51/kmē). The average household size was 2.66 people, and the average family size was 3.22 people. In the Hancock County, 24.1% of the population was under the age of 18, 9.9% were 18 to 24, 31% were 25 to 44, 23% were 45 to 64, and 12% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 114.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 118.2 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 9440, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 23.5% White, 75.83% Black or African American, 0.18% American Indian, 0.12% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.38% from two or more races.
