Hancock City is a one of the Houghton County, Michigan, located in Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. Hancock City had an official population of 4323 in 2000. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 4158, making it Michigan's 202nd largest. The city spans an area of 2.85 mi˛ (7.38 square kilometre), of which, 2.5 square miles (6.47 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.35 square miles (0.91 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Michigan's 253rd largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4323 people in the city, organized into 1769 households, and 903 families living in the city. The population density was 1727.5 people per square mile (666.99/km˛), making it the 177th most densely populated city in Michigan. There were 1983 housing units at an average density of 793.2 per square mile (306.26/km˛). The average household size was 2.22 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 19% under the age of 18, 18% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 20.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males. The median age is 36.8 years, The median age of males was 30.9 years, for females the median age was 42.4 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 95.95% White, 0.76% Black or African American, 0.93% American Indian, 1.06% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, 1.04% from two or more races and 0.23% Other races.
