Hampden County is a county in the United States of Massachusetts. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 456228 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 460840, making it the eighth most populous county in Massachusetts. The county comprises an area of 634.12 sq mi (1642.36 sq km), of which, 618.4 square miles (1601.65 sq km) of it is land and 15.71 square miles (40.69 sq km) of it is water, making it Massachusetts's ninth largest county by total area.

In the county Age distribution was 26.1% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 14.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 108.8 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 114 females. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 460840, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 399827 White, 43287 Black or African American, 1629 American Indian, 8079 Asian, 887 Native Hawaiian, and 7131 from two or more races.
