Halifax County, Virginia is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The county has a population of 37355 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 35412, making it Virginia's 48th largest county. The county comprises an area of 829.56 sq mi (2148.55 square kilometre), of which, 819.3 square miles (2121.98 square kilometre) of it is land and 10.27 square miles (26.6 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fifth largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.

As of July 2008, the estimated population was 35412, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 61.17% White, 37.39% Black or African American, 0.27% American Indian, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.84% from two or more races.
