Halifax County, Virginia is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The county has a population of 37355 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 35412, making it Virginia's 48th largest county. The county comprises an area of 829.56 sq mi (2148.55 square kilometre), of which, 819.3 square miles (2121.98 square kilometre) of it is land and 10.27 square miles (26.6 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fifth largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.

The population density was 45.6 people per square mile (17.61/kmē), making its Virginia's 29th least densely populated county. In the county Age distribution was 23.4% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 26.4% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 110.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 115.3 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 35412, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 61.17% White, 37.39% Black or African American, 0.27% American Indian, 0.33% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.84% from two or more races.
