Halifax County, North Carolina is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Halifax County is home to 57370 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 54983, It is the 48th largest county by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 731.35 sq mi (1894.19 kmē), of which, 725.36 square miles (1878.67 kmē) of it is land and 5.99 square miles (15.51 kmē) of it is water, it is the 19th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

In July 2008, its estimated population was 54983, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 41.09% White, 53.87% Black or African American, 3.49% American Indian, 0.68% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.85% from two or more races.
