In July 2008, its estimated population was 35234, It is the 83rd most populous county in the U.S. state of Texas. It has total area of 1004.77 mi˛ (2602.34 square kilometre), of which, 1004.65 square miles (2602.03 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.12 square miles (0.31 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 80th largest by area in the U.S. state of Texas.

The population density was 36.4 people per square mile (14.05/km˛), it is the 90th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 13526 housing units at an average density of 13.5 per square mile (5.21/km˛). The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.32. In the county Age distribution was 30.2% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 97.7 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 98.7 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 35234, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 91.01% White, 6.09% Black or African American, 1.34% American Indian, 0.62% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 0.89% from two or more races.
