Hale County is one of the 67 county of Alabama, located towards the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. In 2000, county's population was 17185 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 18145, making it Alabama's 17th smallest county. The county extends throughout a territory of 656.47 mi˛ (1700.25 sq km ), of which, 643.74 square miles (1667.28 sq km) of it is land and 12.74 square miles (33 sq km) of it is water, it is the 39th largest by area in the U.S. state of Alabama.

As of the census of 2000, there were 17185 people in the county, organized into 6415 households, and 4606 families living in the county. The population density was 26.7 people per square mile (10.31/km˛), it is 19th least densely populated county in Alabama. There were 7756 housing units at an average density of 12 per square mile (4.63/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.63 persons, and the average family size was 3.19 persons. In the Hale County, 29.6% of the population was under the age of 18, 9.1% were 18 to 24, 26.7% were 25 to 44, 21.1% were 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.6 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 18145, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 7494 White, 10494 Black or African American, 33 American Indian, 27 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 93 from two or more races.
