Gunnison County is one of the 63 county of Colorado, located towards the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 13956 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 15147 in July 2008, It is the 32nd largest in terms of population. Its area is just over 3259.75 mi˛ (8442.71 square kilometre), of which, 3238.81 square miles (8388.48 square kilometre) of it is land and 20.93 square miles (54.21 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fifth largest by area in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Colorado.

As of the census of 2000, there were 13956 people in the county, organized into 5649 households, and 2968 families residing in the county. The population density was 4.3 people per square mile (1.66/km˛), it is Colorado's 19th least densely populated county. There were 9135 housing units at an average density of 2.8 per square mile (1.08/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.3 persons, and the average family size was 2.84 persons. In the county Age distribution was 17.9% under the age of 18, 21.1% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 84.5 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 82.7 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 15147, The racial makeup of the county was 96.05% White, 0.75% Black or African American, 1.06% American Indian, 0.78% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.34% from two or more races.
