Guilford County is a United States county located in the United States of North Carolina. In 2000, the population was 421048. The July 2008 population estimate is 472216, It is the third largest in terms of population. It has total area of 657.7 miē (1703.44 kmē), of which, 649.42 square miles (1681.99 kmē) of it is land and 8.28 square miles (21.45 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 24th largest by total area among North Carolina's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 421048 people, 168667 households, and 109819 families residing in the county. The population density was 648.3 people per square mile (250.31/kmē), it is North Carolina's sixth most densely populated county. There were 180391 housing units at an average density of 277.8 per square mile (107.26/kmē). The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.96. In the county the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 11% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.6 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 472216, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 63.22% White, 31.56% Black or African American, 0.56% American Indian, 3.23% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.38% from two or more races.
