Groton City is a city located in the New London County, Connecticut, United States. The population of city in 2000 stood at 10010 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 9316, making it Connecticut's 38th largest. It is spread over 6.74 sq mi (17.46 kmē), of which, 3.19 square miles (8.26 kmē ) of it is land and 3.55 square miles (9.19 kmē) of it is water, making it Connecticut's 37th largest by total area. It is ranks fifth in the size of its inland waterways in Connecticut.

As of the census of 2000, there were 10010 people, 4230 households, and 2446 families living in the city. The population density was 3138 people per square mile (1211.59/kmē), making its Connecticut's 16th most densely populated city. There were 4569 housing units at an average density of 1432.3 per square mile (553.01/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.19 persons, and the average family size was 2.77 persons. In the city the population was spread out, with 22.5% under the age of 18, 15.7% from 18 to 24, 32.9% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 90.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 88 females. The median age is 31.6 years, The median age of males was 29.6 years, for females the median age was 33.8 years. The racial makeup of the city was 7780 White, 1019 Black or African American, 93 American Indian, 355 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, 474 from two or more races and 284 Ohter races.
