Grimes City is a United States city located in the Polk and Dallas counties, Iowa, United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 5098 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 8419, It is the 75th most populous in the U.S. state of Iowa. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.98 square miles (23.26 kmē), of which, 8.95 square miles (23.18 kmē) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 kmē) of it is water, making it Iowa's 34th largest by total area.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 5098 people, 1887 households, and 1437 families residing in the city. The population density was 569.4 people per square mile (219.85/kmē), making its Iowa's 617th most densely populated city. There were 1958 housing units at an average density of 218.8 per square mile (84.48/kmē). The average household size was 2.7 people, and the average family size was 3.13 people. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 32.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 39.2% from 25 to 44, 15.6% from 45 to 64, and 5.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.1 males. The median age was 30.7 years, the median age of male residents at 29.9 and the median age of female residents at 31.6. The racial makeup of the city was 4955 White, 17 Black or African American, 11 American Indian, 45 Asian, Native Hawaiian, 56 from two or more races and 14 Ohter races.
