Gretna City is a United States city located in the Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 17423 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 16399, It is the 24th most populous in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The city extends throughout a territory of 3.86 square miles (10 sq km ), of which, 3.5 square miles (9.06 sq km) of it is land and 0.36 square miles (0.93 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 160th largest by total area in Louisiana.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 17423 residents, 400 households, and 290 families in the city. The population density was 4983.9 people per square mile (1924.29/kmē), it is the sixth most populated city in terms of population density. The racial makeup of the city was 56.32% White, 35.53% Black or African American, 0.6% American Indian, 3.12% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, 1.75% from two or more races and 2.63% Other races.
