Gregory County, South Dakota is a county located in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 4792. Its population was estimated at 4084 in July 2008, It is 40th most populous county in South Dakota. The county extends throughout a territory of 1053.45 square miles (2728.42 kmē ), of which, 1015.93 square miles (2631.25 kmē) of it is land and 37.51 square miles (97.15 kmē) of it is water, it is the 30th largest by area in the U.S. state of South Dakota. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in South Dakota.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4792 people in the county, organized into 2022 households, and 1290 families living in the county. The population density was 4.7 people per square mile (1.81/kmē), giving it the 38th most densely populated county among the South Dakota. There were 2405 housing units at an average density of 2.4 per square mile (0.93/kmē). The average household size was 2.32 persons, and the average family size was 2.98 persons. In the Gregory County, 24.3% of the population was under the age of 18, 5.1% were 18 to 24, 22% were 25 to 44, 23.8% were 45 to 64, and 24.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.9 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 4084, The racial makeup of the county was 91.23% White, 0.05% Black or African American, 7.37% American Indian, 0.32% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 1.03% from two or more races.
