Greenwood City is a city located in the Leflore County, Mississippi, United States. In 2000, the population was 18425. The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 16084, It is the 19th most populous in the U.S. state of Mississippi. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.52 square miles (24.66 sq km), of which, 9.22 square miles (23.88 sq km) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.78 sq km) of it is water, it is the 67th largest in terms of geographical size.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 18425 people, 6916 households, and 4525 families residing in the city. The population density was 1997.8 people per square mile (771.35/kmē), it is the 15th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Mississippi. There were 7565 housing units at an average density of 820.5 per square mile (316.8/kmē). The average household size was 2.59 persons, and the average family size was 3.29 persons. In the city the population was distributed as follows: 31% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 18.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 84.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.9 males. The median age of the city's population was 31.7 years, The median age of males was 28.4 years, for females the median age was 34.4 years. The racial makeup of the city was 32.82% White, 65.36% Black or African American, 0.11% American Indian, 0.91% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, 0.48% from two or more races and 0.24% Other races.
