Greene County is a one of the county from Virginia's 135 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 15244 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 17964, It is the 82nd largest county by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. It covers total area of 156.96 square miles (406.52 kmē), of which, 156.58 square miles (405.54 kmē) of it is land and 0.39 square miles (1.01 kmē) of it is water, it is the 39th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15244 residents, 5574 households, and 4291 families in the county. The population density was 97.4 people per square mile (37.61/kmē), it would be the 64th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 5986 housing units at an average density of 38.2 per square mile (14.75/kmē). The average household size was 2.71 people, and the average family size was 3.07 people. The population's age distribution was 27.4% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 9.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males. Its population was estimated at 17964 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 16213 White, 1244 Black or African American, 34 American Indian, 195 Asian, 5 Native Hawaiian, and 273 from two or more races.
