Greene County is a United States county located in the United States of New York. The county has a population of 48195 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 48992, making it the 13th least populous county in New York. It is spread over 658.13 miē (1704.55 kmē), of which, 647.75 square miles (1677.66 kmē ) of it is land and 10.38 square miles (26.88 kmē) of it is water, it is the 37th largest by area in the U.S. state of New York.

For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 92.4 females. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 48992, The racial makeup of the county was 44649 White, 3120 Black or African American, 154 American Indian, 406 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 654 from two or more races.
