Greene County, Alabama is a county of the United States of Alabama. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 9974 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 9172, giving it the smallest population among Alabama's county. It is spread over 659.93 square miles (1709.21 square kilometre), of which, 645.87 square miles (1672.8 square kilometre ) of it is land and 14.07 square miles (36.44 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 37th largest by total area among Alabama's county.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 29.2% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 9172, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 1912 White, 7200 Black or African American, 12 American Indian, 15 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 33 from two or more races.
