The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 2290, It is the 21st least populous county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. The county has a total area of 570.71 miē (1478.13 kmē), of which, 569.85 square miles (1475.9 kmē) of it is land and 0.85 square miles (2.2 kmē) of it is water, it is the 29th smallest in terms of geographical size.


As of the census of 2000, there were 2714 people in the county, organized into 1077 households, and 734 families residing in the county.
