According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 979.19 sq mi (2536.09 kmē), of which, 933.51 square miles (2417.78 kmē) of it is land and 45.68 square miles (118.31 kmē) of it is water, it is the 88th largest by area in the U.S. state of Texas.
