Gray County is one of the 254 county of Texas, located towards the Southern Region (West South Central) of United States. In 2000, the population was 22744. In July 2008, its estimated population was 22248, It is the 107th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 929.25 sq mi (2406.75 kmē), of which, 928.28 square miles (2404.23 kmē) of it is land and 0.97 square miles (2.51 kmē) of it is water, making it the 115th largest by size in Texas.

The population density was 24.5 people per square mile (9.46/kmē), it is the 115th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Texas. There were 10567 housing units at an average density of 11.4 per square mile (4.4/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.39 persons, and the average family size was 2.93 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 24% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 104 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.7 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 22248, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 19988 White, 1425 Black or African American, 274 American Indian, 102 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 455 from two or more races.
