As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 49238, It is the 28th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Its area is just over 1183.31 sq mi (3064.76 sq km), of which, 1147.85 square miles (2972.92 sq km) of it is land and 35.46 square miles (91.84 sq km) of it is water, it is the 15th largest by area in the U.S. state of Wisconsin.

For every 100 females there were 103 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 49238, The racial makeup of the county was 97.43% White, 0.99% Black or African American, 0.19% American Indian, 0.76% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.61% from two or more races.
