The county extends throughout a territory of 2791.29 sq mi (7229.41 kmē ), of which, 2681.06 square miles (6943.91 kmē) of it is land and 110.23 square miles (285.49 kmē) of it is water, it is the fourth largest in terms of geographical size.

In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 32% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 27% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 104.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.4 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 84697, The racial makeup of the county was 94.7% White, 1.2% Black or African American, 1.48% American Indian, 1.13% Asian, 0.11% Native Hawaiian, and 1.38% from two or more races.
