Granite City City is one of the city of Madison County, Illinois, located towards the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 31301 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 30703, It is 60th most populous in Illinois. It has total area of 17.17 miē (44.47 kmē), of which, 16.68 square miles (43.2 kmē) of it is land and 0.49 square miles (1.27 kmē) of it is water, making it Illinois's 20th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 31301 residents, 12773 households, and 8462 families in the city. The population density was 1876.2 people per square mile (724.4/kmē), it would be the 363rd most densely populated city in the U.S. state of Illinois.
