Grand Traverse County is a county in the United States of Michigan. The population of the county was 77654 as per the 2000 census data. In July 2008, its estimated population was 86071, giving it the 23rd largest population among Michigan's county. The county spans an area of 601.13 square miles (1556.92 square kilometre), of which, 465.07 square miles (1204.53 square kilometre) of it is land and 136.06 square miles (352.39 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 54th largest in terms of geographical size.

As of the census of 2000, there were 77654 people in the county, organized into 30396 households, and 20726 families residing in the county. The population density was 167 people per square mile (64.48/kmē), it is the 20th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Michigan. There were 34842 housing units at an average density of 74.9 per square mile (28.92/kmē). The average household size was 2.49 people, and the average family size was 2.99 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.4% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 24% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.1 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 86071, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 96.15% White, 1.04% Black or African American, 1.06% American Indian, 0.59% Asian, 0.03% Native Hawaiian, and 1.13% from two or more races.
