Grand Rapids City is a United States city located in the Kent County, Michigan, United States. It is home to over 197800 people (2000 census). The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 193396, It is the second most populous in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city has a total area of 45.32 sq mi (117.38 kmē), of which, 44.64 square miles (115.62 kmē) of it is land and 0.68 square miles (1.76 kmē) of it is water, making it the third largest by size in Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 197800 people in the city, organized into 73217 households, and 44370 families residing in the city. The population density was 4431.2 people per square mile (1710.9/kmē), making it the 28th most densely populated city in Michigan. There were 77960 housing units at an average density of 1746.4 per square mile (674.29/kmē). The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.24. In the city the population was spread out, with 27% under the age of 18, 13.1% from 18 to 24, 31.5% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 67.3% White, 20.41% Black or African American, 0.74% American Indian, 1.62% Asian, 0.12% Native Hawaiian, 3.19% from two or more races and 6.63% Other races.
