Grand Junction City is a city located in Mesa County, Colorado, in the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. The population of city in 2000 stood at 41986 as per the Census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the city is 49688, It is the 16th largest by population in the U.S. state of Colorado. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.09 sq mi (80.52 square kilometre), of which, 30.81 square miles (79.8 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.27 square miles (0.7 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 19th largest by area in the U.S. state of Colorado. It is ranks 17 in the size of its inland waterways in Colorado.

As of the census of 2000, there were 41986 people in the city, organized into 17865 households, and 10549 families residing in the city. The population density was 1362.6 people per square mile (526.1/kmē), making its Colorado's 136th most densely populated city. There were 18784 housing units at an average density of 609.7 per square mile (235.41/kmē). The average household size was 2.23 persons, and the average family size was 2.84 persons. In the city the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 11.9% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 22.8% from 45 to 64, and 17.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.6 males. The median age was 38.8 years, The median age of males was 36.6 years, for females the median age was 40.8 years. The racial makeup of the city was 38533 White, 251 Black or African American, 395 American Indian, 320 Asian, 52 Native Hawaiian, 835 from two or more races and 1600 Ohter races.
