Goochland County is a one of the county from Virginia's 135 counties, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 16863. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 20956, It is the 79th most populous county in the U.S. state of Virginia. It has total area of 289.99 sq mi (751.07 square kilometre), of which, 284.43 square miles (736.67 square kilometre) of it is land and 5.56 square miles (14.4 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Virginia's 74th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 16863 people in the county, organized into 6158 households, and 4712 families living in the county. The population density was 59.3 people per square mile (22.9/kmē), making it the 42nd least densely populated county in Virginia. There were 6555 housing units at an average density of 23 per square mile (8.88/kmē). The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.88. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 21.3% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.3 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 20956, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 76.9% White, 20.77% Black or African American, 0.18% American Indian, 1.25% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 0.89% from two or more races.
