As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 38656, It is the 43rd largest county by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. The county comprises an area of 288 mi˛ (745.92 sq km), of which, 216.61 square miles (561.02 sq km) of it is land and 71.39 square miles (184.9 sq km) of it is water, it is the 75th largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is ranks tenth in the size of its inland waterways in Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 34780 people in the county, organized into 13127 households, and 9883 families living in the county. The population density was 160.6 people per square mile (62.01/km˛), it is the 53rd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 14494 housing units at an average density of 66.9 per square mile (25.83/km˛). The average household size was 2.62 persons, and the average family size was 3.02 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 30.4% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.9 males. Its population was estimated at 38656 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 33669 White, 3873 Black or African American, 163 American Indian, 288 Asian, 25 Native Hawaiian, and 638 from two or more races.
