Gilpin County is a county in the United States of Colorado. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 4757 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 5153, It is Colorado's 14th least populous county. The county spans an area of 150.25 mi˛ (389.15 sq km), of which, 149.87 square miles (388.16 sq km) of it is land and 0.39 square miles (1.01 sq km) of it is water, it is the smallest by area in the U.S. state of Colorado.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 4757 people, 2043 households, and 1264 families living in the county. The population density was 31.7 people per square mile (12.24/km˛), it would be the 14th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Colorado. There were 2929 housing units at an average density of 19.5 per square mile (7.53/km˛). The average household size was 2.32 people, and the average family size was 2.81 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 21.1% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 37.4% from 25 to 44, 30% from 45 to 64, and 5.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 112.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 116.1 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 5153, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 4913 White, 27 Black or African American, 43 American Indian, 65 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 96 from two or more races.
