Gilmer County is one of the 159 county of Georgia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 23456. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 28537, giving it the 61st largest population among Georgia's county. Its area is just over 431.83 square miles (1118.43 kmē), of which, 426.69 square miles (1105.12 kmē) of it is land and 5.14 square miles (13.31 kmē) of it is water, it is the 52nd largest by area in the U.S. state of Georgia.

The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 28537, The racial makeup of the county was 96.9% White, 0.89% Black or African American, 0.88% American Indian, 0.24% Asian, 0.32% Native Hawaiian, and 0.77% from two or more races.
