Gilmer County is one of the 159 county of Georgia, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, the population was 23456. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 28537, giving it the 61st largest population among Georgia's county. Its area is just over 431.83 square miles (1118.43 kmē), of which, 426.69 square miles (1105.12 kmē) of it is land and 5.14 square miles (13.31 kmē) of it is water, it is the 52nd largest by area in the U.S. state of Georgia.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 23456 residents, 9071 households, and 6692 families in the county. The population density was 55 people per square mile (21.24/kmē), it is the 81st most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Georgia. There were 11924 housing units at an average density of 27.9 per square mile (10.77/kmē). The average household size was 2.57 people, and the average family size was 2.96 people. Age range in the county was well distributed with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 103 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.3 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 28537, The racial makeup of the county was 96.9% White, 0.89% Black or African American, 0.88% American Indian, 0.24% Asian, 0.32% Native Hawaiian, and 0.77% from two or more races.
