According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 23782, It is the 103rd largest county by population in the U.S. state of Texas. It has total area of 1061.48 mi˛ (2749.22 sq km), of which, 1061.06 square miles (2748.13 sq km) of it is land and 0.42 square miles (1.09 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 67th largest by total area in Texas.
