Gilchrist County is a county in the United States of Florida. Gilchrist County had an official population of 14437 in 2000. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 17191, It is Florida's 11th least populous county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 355.47 sq mi (920.66 kmē), of which, 348.89 square miles (903.62 kmē) of it is land and 6.58 square miles (17.04 kmē) of it is water, it is the fourth smallest by area in the U.S. state of Florida.

The population density was 41.4 people per square mile (15.98/kmē), it is 19th least densely populated county in Florida. There were 5906 housing units at an average density of 16.9 per square mile (6.53/kmē). The average household size was 2.61 persons, and the average family size was 3.01 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.4% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 88.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 86.9 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 17191, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 91.34% White, 6.88% Black or African American, 0.42% American Indian, 0.24% Asian, 0.01% Native Hawaiian, and 1.11% from two or more races.
