Gem County is a United States county located in the United States of Idaho. The population of the county was 15181 as per the 2000 census data. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 16513, It is 19th most populous county in Idaho. The county encompasses an area of 565.75 square miles (1465.29 square kilometre ), of which, 562.58 square miles (1457.08 square kilometre) of it is land and 3.17 square miles (8.21 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the fifth smallest by total area among Idaho's county.

As of the census of 2000, there were 15181 residents, 5539 households, and 4175 families in the county. The population density was 27 people per square mile (10.42/kmē), it is Idaho's 12th most densely populated county. There were 5888 housing units at an average density of 10.5 per square mile (4.05/kmē). The average household size was 2.7 people, and the average family size was 3.12 people. The population's age distribution was 28% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.7 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 16513, The racial makeup of the county was 16009 White, 26 Black or African American, 170 American Indian, 81 Asian, 9 Native Hawaiian, and 218 from two or more races.
