Gaston County is one of the 100 county of North Carolina, located towards the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 190365 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 206679, making it the eighth most populous county in North Carolina. The county spans an area of 363.54 square miles (941.56 square kilometre), of which, 356.21 square miles (922.58 square kilometre) of it is land and 7.33 square miles (18.98 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 25th smallest by total area in North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 190365 people in the county, organized into 73936 households, and 53327 families residing in the county. The population density was 534.4 people per square mile (206.33/kmē), it is North Carolina's seventh most densely populated county. There were 78842 housing units at an average density of 221.3 per square mile (85.44/kmē). The average household size was 2.53 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 206679, The racial makeup of the county was 170367 White, 31320 Black or African American, 637 American Indian, 2301 Asian, 88 Native Hawaiian, and 1966 from two or more races.
