Garfield County is a county in the United States of Montana. In 2000, the population was 1279. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 1184, It is the sixth smallest county by population in the U.S. state of Montana. It has total area of 4847.54 square miles (12555.07 square kilometre), of which, 4668.06 square miles (12090.22 square kilometre) of it is land and 179.48 square miles (464.85 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the seventh largest by total area among Montana's county. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in Montana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1279 people in the county, organized into 532 households, and 366 families living in the county. The population density was 0.3 people per square mile (0.12/kmē), it is Montana's second least densely populated county. There were 961 housing units at an average density of 0.2 per square mile (0.08/kmē). The average household size was 2.38 people, and the average family size was 2.93 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.5% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 23.3% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 106.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.4 males. Its population was estimated at 1184 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 99.16% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.51% American Indian, 0.08% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 0.08% from two or more races.
