Garfield County is a county in the United States of Colorado. The population of the county was 43791 as per the 2000 census data. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 55426, It is the 12th most populous county in the U.S. state of Colorado. It covers total area of 2955.76 sq mi (7655.38 square kilometre), of which, 2947.06 square miles (7632.85 square kilometre) of it is land and 8.7 square miles (22.53 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the eighth largest by area in the U.S. state of Colorado.

As of the census of 2000, there were 43791 residents, 16229 households, and 11286 families in the county. The population density was 14.9 people per square mile (5.75/kmē), making it the 27th most densely populated county in Colorado. There were 17336 housing units at an average density of 5.9 per square mile (2.28/kmē). The average household size was 2.65 people, and the average family size was 3.11 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 27.1% under the age of 18, 9% from 18 to 24, 33% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 105.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 55426, The racial makeup of the county was 96.18% White, 1.06% Black or African American, 0.87% American Indian, 0.53% Asian, 0.07% Native Hawaiian, and 1.29% from two or more races.
